Effective policing for the security of lives and properties is crucial for maintaining public safety. A community’s economy and global image are directly impacted positively when people feel safe and secure.
The Oladipo Fadamiro-led government of Lagos state will ensure the following objectives to enhance the security
SECURITY OF LIVES
CCTV must be placed on all major roads in Lagos with real time monitoring from control centres. These cameras are effective in cases of robberies, kidnapping, vehicle theft, highway accidents, over-speeding and other traffic offences
All highways, bridges and major roads must be lit at night. They must also be monitored to reduce the incidence of ‘one chance’ robberies, traffic robberies, tout or beggar molestation.
Police and law enforcement agencies in Lagos must be trained to be more professional and have respect for human rights. For example, arrest and search warrants are necessary before arresting or searching a suspect respectively.
The government will increase motivation to police officers by improving their working environment, providing the necessary equipment, and promoting their welfare.
Incorporate the use of technology and Artificial Intelligence in policing. Examples include drone technology to monitor waterways or in Search and Rescue missions, facial recognition and gunshot locator technology (e.g. Shotspotter used in US)
Popularize the emergency numbers and ensure response is quick and in line with international best practice – answer the phone within 10 seconds and arrive at the scene within 15 minutes
Partner with private sector and engage with communities in order to develop strategies to improve policing and security. For example, every travelling bus (and train) may be required to have a tracker. If the bus makes an unplanned stop for more than 5 minutes or deviates significantly from the normal route, the security agencies are alerted.
Organize trainings in self-defense, unarmed combat, gun handling as well as first-aid techniques in NYSC and other youth organizations. These are survival techniques just like swimming and driving
Create a digital and cyber security arm to secure government digital assets, detect and prevent scams and scammers.
Donate prisons to decongest existing ones. Improve the feeding system.
Agberoism will be banned. Their skills and energies can be channeled into more productive use through employment or enterprise by attaching them to several associations such as association of welders, farmers, bricklayers, painters, vulcanizers, etc
