FOOD SECURITY

Food is one of the necessities of life. Nigeria has over 30 million hectares of arable land with abundant rainfall relative to many other countries. Unfortunately, food import has been on the rise.

The government of Lagos will take the following steps to improve food supply and significantly reduce the cost of essential food items.

Partner with established farmers (e.g. CSS Farms in Abuja) within and outside Lagos by guaranteeing purchase of essential items such as vegetables, fruits and staples for 2 years.

Become the middleman between farmers and customers. Invest in trailers and heavy goods vehicles to transport harvest produce from farm locations across the country to Lagos where off takers such as large supermarkets and market associations can easily pick up.

Encourage farming activities for Lagosians by subsidizing production costs such as cost of farmlands, mechanization, seedlings, fertilizers, poultry feeds etc. Ensure effective distribution and proper use of these resources to prevent abuse.

Invest in farming across the country using the unique advantages of each location. Also, check the level of use of the 100,000 hectares of land donated to Lagos by the Niger state government in August, 2025.
